Give Blood

Every year Montefiore Medical Center, thousands of units of blood are donated for sick and injured patients of all ages. Without this blood, many of the lifesaving procedures performed at Montefiore would not be possible. The blood you donate gives our patients a better chance for a healthy life.

Requirements for Giving Blood

All blood donors must:

• Be In good general health.
• Be at least 17 years old (no upper age limit).
• Have no high-risk factors for HIV or hepatitis.
• Have no history of viral hepatitis after the age of 11.
• Have no cold, flu, or symptoms of illness for at least seven days before donating.
• Have no less than 8 weeks between blood donation appointments.
• Eat a healthy meal & drink plenty of water prior to donating.

Directed Blood Donations

Family members or friends who match a patient's blood type may donate blood to be received by the patient. In the case of surgery, the blood must be drawn at least five working days before the date of the procedure to allow time for processing for transfusion. Donated blood may be saved for no more than 35 days.
