Department of Anesthesiology

As the University Hospital for Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Montefiore is a premier academic medical center nationally renowned for its clinical excellence, scientific discovery and commitment to its community. Recognized among the top hospitals nationally and ranked sixth out of 184 in the New York metropolitan area by U.S. News & World Report's Best Hospitals metro area rankings, Montefiore provides compassionate, patient- and family-centered care and educates the healthcare professionals of tomorrow. The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore is consistently named in the U.S. News list of “America’s Best Children’s Hospitals,” and is second among children's hospitals in the New York metro area, according to U.S. News and World Report's Best Children's Hospitals rankings.

With four hospitals, 1,491 beds and 93,000 annual hospital discharges, Montefiore is an integrated health system seamlessly linked by advanced health information technology. State-of-the-art primary and specialty care are provided through a network of nearly 100 locations across the region, including the largest school health program in the nation and a home health program. More than 93,000 inpatient stays every year include approximately 7,000 births. The Emergency Department is one of the country’s busiest, handling approximately 300,000 visits per year. System-wide, Montefiore receives more than 2.5 million patient visits annually at more than 100 locations providing ambulatory care in the Bronx and Westchester County. Anesthesiologists are involved in a wide range of cases, delivering more than 30,000 anesthetics each year in 34 operating rooms, two large delivery suites at different sites, and other locations around the hospital.

Ellise S. Delphin, MD, MPH, is the Unified Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University. The Department includes approximately 60 faculty members, 45 anesthesiology residents in training, and a growing number of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) under her direction.

Montefiore’s anesthesiologists provide personal medical management of all anesthetics administered during surgical, obstetrical and other medical procedures, and are part of the multidisciplinary teams working in all operating rooms. They are integrally involved in quality management and patient safety efforts, including the implementation of the World Health Organization protocols.

Researc - Montefiore Department of AnesthesiologyResidency

The residency program, led by Dr. Delphin, is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). An anesthesia residency at Montefiore is an opportunity to train among some of the field’s best clinicians and educators. At the program’s core is a comprehensive and robust curriculum in perioperative care.

Residents work across all of Montefiore’s hospitals and other locations. They are mentored in the dynamic fields of critical care and pain management and are strongly encouraged to contribute to the discipline, from enhancing practice protocols to conducting research. As the Department’s clinical expansion extends into new subspecialty areas, the training program will expand to launch more fellowships, further developing our nationally recognized residency program in anesthesiology.

Research

The Department’s increasing clinical research portfolio includes a groundbreaking initiative to inspire innovation and encourage each resident to pursue his or her own project. Singh Nair, MD, Director of Research, assists residents in organizing their work, and residents benefit from core lectures in project design, biostatistics and manuscript preparation. All residents are invited to contribute to the field by writing book chapters and reviewing articles, joining American Society of Anesthesiologists committees, and honing their communication skills with oral presentations.
