Dr. Reza Ghavamian completed his undergraduate and medical studies at Boston University  and trained in Urology at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, Mass.  During his training, he spent a year at The Great Ormand Street Hospital for Sick Children in London, UK  under the tutelage of Mr. Philip Ransley.  After completing his residency, Dr. Ghavamian completed  the Urologic Oncology Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN where his main interest was  prostate and renal cancer. He has authored or co-authored several articles and book chapters in the field of urological oncology.

Dr. Ghavamian's area  of expertise is Urologic Oncology. He is the director of Urologic Oncology in the department of Urology. His main interest is the application of the most recent minimally invasive technology to the treatment of urologic cancers. These include laparoscopic renal surgery including laparoscopic partial nephrectomy, radical nephrectomy and laparoscopic nephroureterectomy.

Dr. Ghavamian has one of the region’s largest experience in laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. This procedure was first performed in May of 2001 at Montefiore and is now the preferred surgical approach for the treatment of prostate cancer at Montefiore.

Dr. Hoenig's areas of expertise include all phases of renal stone disease (both surgical and medical management), and laparoscopic kidney surgery. His research and new clinical interests are in renal stone disease and the development of new laparoscopic surgical techniques to make a wider array of minimally invasive surgery available to patients.

Norman Z. Kahan M.D., Assistant Professor

Norman Kahan, MD has been engaged in the practice of general urology since 1973 at the Monefiore Medical Center.   Dr. Kahan received his medical degree at the New York University School of Medicine in 1966.  After completing an internship at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York in 1968, he served in the US Army Medical Corps as a surgeon from 1968-1970.  Dr. Kahan returned to the states to complete his residency training in Urology at the Montefiore Medical Center.  In 1973 he became  a full time member of the department and over the past 25 years Dr. Kahan has played a major role in the success of the urology department.

Although Dr. Kahan treats a broad spectrum of urologic conditions, he specializes in the care and treatment of men with prostate cancer, and for the last five years has treated patients with brachytheraphy, a particular form of radiation therphy which involves inserting tiny, radioactive seeds into the prostate.  This obviates the need for radical surgery and its attendent morbidity.  In conjunction with the Radiation Oncology Department, Dr. Kahan was instrumental in establishing the prostate brachytherapy program at the medical center.  Thus far the joint effort has resulted in more than 250 implants.  Dr. Kahan was involved with establishing an active program here in cryo-surgical ablation of the prostate.  Dr. Kahan is a also an active member of several national committees that are involved in establishing standards of appropriate care, treatment and quality assurance for patients receiving brachtherapy.

Since that time the practice has expanded regionally with outreach offices and referrals from the counties surrounding the New York metropolitan area.  A strong clinical practice has been the basis for this growth and for Dr. Kogan's academic pursuits.  He has published extensively in journals and textbooks regarding his interests in cryptorchidism, disorders of sexual development and reconstructive pediatric urology.  He has also lectured nationally and internationally in these areas.  Dr. Kogan has served as the liaison person between the American Academy of Pediatrics and the U. S. Food and Drug Administration regarding the issue of testicular prosthetic devices.  He presently is the medical director for an ongoing study of testicular devices in children.  He has been a member of the Executive Committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics Urology Section and has served on the Editorial board of the pediatric section of the Journal of Urology.  Dr. Kogan continues to have clinical and laboratory research interests involving testicular disorders in children, environmental aspects of reproductive health in children, reconstructive pediatric urology and innovative techniques in minimally invasive surgery in children.
