Pharmacy Services

Did you know that we...

  • are one of 15% of medical centers in the US with fully implemented computerized physician order entry,
  • dispensed over 12.5 million medications to hospitalized patients in 2010,
  • established the first pharmacy residency in New York City (1968).

Pharmaceutical Care is the responsible provision of drug therapy for the purpose of achieving definite outcomes that improve a patient's quality of life.  The mission of the Department of Pharmacy at Montefiore Medical Center is to create an environment that enables pharmacists to contribute to programs and services that emphasize the health needs of the public for the treatment and prevention of disease. We are dedicated to providing high quality services that foster the efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness of drug use as well as promoting pharmacy as an essential component of the health care team.

The department provides a wide array of pharmaceutical services to 4 hospitals and an ambulatory care network.  These include clinical pharmacy services, efficient and accurate drug distribution, drug information and a PGY1 pharmacy residency program as well as satellite pharmacies in Oncology, Critical Care, Pediatrics, Medicine, Cardiology and Operating Room.

The Pharmacy is composed of staff pharmacists, pharmacy specialists (technicians), pharmacy interns, support personnel (clerical and stockworkers) and pharmacist managers including executive managers, operational managers, clinical pharmacy managers, and 5 pharmacy residents.

Clinical Services
The Pharmacy offers clinical specialties in anesthesiology, ambulatory care, critical care, cardiology, immunization, infectious disease, oncology, pediatrics, solid organ transplantation and investigational drug services. These specialists interact with physicians, nurses and other members of the interdisciplinary team, ensuring appropriate and safe drug therapy outcomes.  Our specialists are active in scholarly and educational activities, publishing and lecturing to various audiences locally, nationally and internationally.  Most are adjunct faculty at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, the Long Island University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, St. John's University College of Pharmacy and Touro College of Pharmacy.

Clinical Pharmacy Specialists are available for pharmacotherapeutic or pharmacokinetic consults.

Drug Information
All Pharmacy practitioners are available to provide drug therapy recommendations and pharmacotherapeutic consultations. We receive hundreds of drug information requests from various health care associates.  Drug information questions can also be answered with various resources including Micromedex and Formulary Advisor.  In addition, the Pharmacy maintains a database of drug information for those inquiries not readily available from other resources. All relevant requests for consultations can be initiated through the Pharmacy Department Drug Information Center which is located on both the Medical Library and the department's internal website.  The DI Center is only available to Montefiore associates.

Investigational Drug Service
The Department of Pharmacy at Montefiore Medical Center provides an investigational drug service (IDS), offering an extensive range of support services to assist principal investigators in conducting research protocols approved by the Institutional Review Board. The ultimate purpose of the service is to:

  • ensure that all investigational drugs are prepared, stored, dispensed and administered in a safe, effective and efficient manner,
  • ensure that pharmaceutical research complies with all applicable guidelines as required by the FDA and Montefiore Medical Center,
  • serve as the coordinating center for investigational drug procurement, storage, inventory control, dose preparation, dosage formulation, blinding, dispensing, sterility testing and drug information services.

For further information on IDS services, please contact Clemencia Solorzano, PharmD, IDS Manager at 718-920-6546.
