The joint replacement surgeons of Montefiore Medical Center focus their full attention on relieving the severely disabling effects of chronic joint pain. We employ every available modern technology and treatment option, to return our patients to living their lives as pain free as possible. Each year more than 15,000 patients come to us for our expertise in treating the entire spectrum of joint conditions affecting the knee, hip, shoulder, elbow, fingers, ankles, toes or spinal discs. Some of the most familiar ones include: osteoarthritis, post-traumatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis, congenital birth defects, and slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE).
Our extraordinary multidisciplinary team of board-certified fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeons, rheumatologists, nurse practitioners, physiotherapists, radiologists, nurses, and social workers collaborate to provide a comprehensive care plan for each patient. Thanks to cutting-edge diagnostics and a wealth of information now available to patients, we are identifying joint conditions at an earlier stage than years ago. As a result, many patients can be treated via non-surgical solutions such as medication and/or physical therapy. However, for others who have exhausted these options, surgery may be necessary.
When you choose Montefiore Medical Center for your care, you are choosing a team of surgeons hailing from the most prestigious institutions worldwide with outstanding expertise in total knee or hip replacements, joint replacement revisions, bilateral knee replacements, and unicompartmental (partial) replacements who utilize the latest prosthesis and the most up to date minimally invasive techniques. We provide individualized preoperative to post-surgical education and a thorough discussion of all treatment options so patients can make a reasoned and informed choice about surgery.
Joint replacement surgery involves the removal or partial removal of an arthritic or damaged joint which is then replaced with prosthesis made of plastic, metal, and or ceramics. It may be cemented (typically for knees or any joint for those with osteoporosis) or not cemented into place, so that the bone will grow into it. It is a common procedure, as approximately 700,000 total hip and knee replacement surgeries are performed each year in the U.S., according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (that's not even accounting for shoulder, elbow, finger, and toe joints). However, where you opt for a joint replacement can make a considerable difference in your recovery.
Our joint replacement team offers all the modern techniques available, including: minimally invasive surgery, alternative bearing surfaces for total joint arthroplasty (i.e. ceramic-polyethylene, metal-metal, and ceramic-ceramic bearing surfaces for less friction and wear rates than metal-on-polyethylene), and small incisions. By embracing these options, our patients experience the speediest recovery with a short hospital stay, and maximum lifespan of their new joints.
Progressive Research
At Montefiore Medical Center, our joint replacement surgeons are constantly striving to improve the services we deliver and are excited about the future. Since we are also the academic faculty of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, we invest significant amounts of time and resources into researching new treatment options and techniques.
Currently we are involved in clinical studies of knee and hip replacements that involve evaluating different implantation techniques, different prosthetic metals and a number of bearing materials. Our laboratory is conducting studies on the cellular mechanisms that lead to early implant failure. Our orthopaedists are not only talented an caring surgeons but truly gifted scientists as well.
