The Center for Hyperbaric Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center is a leading referral resource for hyperbaric medicine in the state of New York with an emphasis on wound care. Our goal is to heal chronic wounds, and in many cases, salvage limbs that might otherwise be at risk of amputation, especially with immune compromised patients, or those with Wagner grade 3 or higher diabetic foot ulcers.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is the medical treatment in which a patient lies comfortably in an acrylic oxygen chamber and breathes 100% pure oxygen at a greater than atmospheric pressure. This process eliminates harmful toxins from the body, fights infections via a leukocytic oxidative bacteria killing function, and promotes growth of new blood vessels in the body tissues. Therefore, chronic wounds are addressed from the inside out, rather than from the outside inward, as with topical therapies.
Common conditions we treat that are responsive to HBOT include:
Distinguished Care Management and Hyperbaric Chambers
At the Center for Hyperbaric Medicine, our team of physicians, vascular surgeons, plastic surgeons, podiatrists, orthopedists, rehabilitative medicine experts, infectious disease specialists, nurses and technicians work in a compassionate, multidisciplinary fashion to customize a program for each patient. We respond to the needs of the individual wound before, during, and after treatment, as HBOT is adjunctive care to wound therapy. This is why we ensure that each patient receives a thorough education regarding expectations and his or her therapy - not just with hyperbaric medicine, but also with overall wound care.
Since there are only 2,000 certified hyperbaric technologists worldwide, it is rather unique that our chambers are operated by certified experts. Additionally, our facility has a 97% patient satisfaction rating and is the only one in the Bronx with an 88% healing rate within 45 days, which bests the national average.
At the Center for Hyperbaric Medicine, we use ‘transcutaneous oximetry' (TCOM) in order to assess the baseline condition of each patient and determine if oxygen is critical to the healing of each wound. At this point, we can also determine if hyperbaric oxygen can deliver enough oxygen to the wound in a sufficient quantity to saturate the wound so that the healing process can continue for up to 4 hours after the therapy is over.
Our two core locations at the Weiler and Moses Divisions each have two Perry Baromedical Sigma chambers that are larger than those often found at other facilities. Our wider cylindrical chambers help accommodate patients with confinement anxiety, so they will feel at ease. Since each treatment takes approximately 90 minutes, we have televisions with VCR and DVD players with each chamber, so patients are entertained while they undergo their oxygen therapy.
