Our History

Montefiore was founded in 1884 by leaders of New York’s Jewish community, who recognized the need for a care facility for patients with tuberculosis and other chronic illnesses. The hospital was named to honor Sir Moses Montefiore, a famed philanthropist of the time.

Today, Montefiore is one of the largest healthcare systems in the nation, serving two million individuals from the Bronx and nearby Westchester County as well as many across the nation and around the world. No doubt our founders would be amazed by the dynamic medical center that now covers three campuses and more than 100 ambulatory locations and whose doctors not only treat, but cure myriad diseases and conditions.

A look at our history reveals traditions set in our earliest days that still guide our mission today.

Advancements in Clinical Research

In 1963, we began to serve as the University Hospital for Albert Einstein College of Medicine, providing clinical education for medical students and residents. As a result of this partnership, our physicians and renowned Centers of Excellence have been able to advance and participate in the most current and effective diagnostic and treatment procedures, contributing to major advancements in medicine. Our collaboration is enhanced today by a focus on advancing clinical and translational research to discover and develop new treatments that benefit our patients.

Groundbreaking Achievements

Montefiore’s distinguished history of “firsts” in medical innovation and community support is the result of a steadfast determination by our leaders, physicians, researchers and dedicated associates to discover new and more effective ways to help our patients. The extensive list of Montefiore milestones details the groundbreaking achievements that have taken place since our inception. Some of these include: the establishment of the first headache unit in 1945, the development and use of the world’s first transvenous pacemaker system in 1958, the first successful operation to separate twins joined at the tops of their heads in 2004 and the first pediatric heart transplant in the Bronx in 2009.

Montefiore Medical Center History

One of the Nation’s First Residencies in Social Medicine

Since our beginning, we have gained inspiration from those we serve. Our Bronx community, located in one of the most diverse and economically-challenged urban counties in the nation, is also one of the nation’s youngest, serving 400,000 children. In 1970, one of the first residencies in social medicine was established, and with our supportive and nurturing community partnerships and alliances we continue to bring excellent, accessible healthcare to the area’s population.

Expanding Healthcare Services and Locations

Montefiore has a distinguished history of an unwavering commitment to community service and the expansion of health services in the community. Our Montefiore Medical Group practice was established in 1948 to service one of the nation's first HMOs and has since expanded to more than 20 locations throughout the Bronx and Westchester. We have provided easier access to healthcare through innovative solutions such as our School Health Program (the first of its kind in the nation), mobile vans, home-visiting doctors and additional sites in underserved neighborhoods. We continue to explore new opportunities to expand our programs and services, to meet the needs of our evolving community.

Montefiore Today

Beginning with one hospital and a desire to serve our community, we now offer a full range of exceptional medical services. Our three acute care hospitals include: the Henry and Lucy Moses Division, the Jack D. Weiler Hospital and the North Division. The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore is one of the most technologically advanced hospitals for children in existence and has been consistently ranked one of "America's Best Children's Hospitals" by the prestigious U.S. News & World Report. In addition, we provide primary and specialty care at more than 100 ambulatory care locations throughout the Bronx and Westchester and address critical health problems on behalf of our residents by bringing vital programs to thousands of children, adults and families in the community.

As Montefiore continues to make history, we are more committed than ever to providing the highest-quality and most current and effective healthcare available. Our lasting commitment to the community and to our mission keeps us securely on the forefront of medical and social innovation.
