1913 |
Montefiore expands its services to the community with new hospital in the Bronx. |

Nation’s first headache unit opens. |

Nation’s first hospital-based Department of Home Health Care created. |
1947 |
Montefiore Medical Group established to serve one of the nation’s first HMOs. |
1950 |
Nation’s first hospital-based Department of Social Medicine. |
1958 |
World’s first transvenous pacemaker system developed and used at Montefiore by Dr. Seymour Furman. |
1962 |
Loeb Center opens for post-hospital nursing care and rehabilitation. |
1966 |
Montefiore’s Children’s Kidney Center was one of the world’s first pediatric renal programs. |
1970 |
Nation’s first community-based lead poisoning prevention program established. |

Residency Program in Social Medicine established to train physicians for inner-city primary care practice. |

One of the nation’s first pediatric kidney transplants performed at Montefiore. |
1980 |
Montefiore earns designation as one of the first comprehensive AIDS centers in New York state. |
1981 |
Established the Mosholu Preservation Corporation as a powerful antidote to widespread housing deterioration and abandonment. |
1989 |
Expansion of primary care network across the Bronx and lower Westchester. |
1991 |
Montefiore was the first to use Taxol for the successful treatment of throat cancer. |
1992 |
Montefiore surgeons are the first in the U.S. to perform a minimally invasive repair of an abdominal aortic aneurysm. |
1994 |
South Bronx Children’s Health Center opens to serve a community in need of physicians. |
1995 |
Montefiore establishes the Care Management Organization, a pioneering provider-driven insurance structure. |
1996 |
One of the first hospitals to utilize Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE), a technology designed to help avoid medical errors. |
1998 |
Innovative emergency room opens at the Weiler Division. |
1998 |
Montefiore is one of the first to perform carotid stenting using a device to protect patients from stroke. |
1999 |
Montefiore receives heart transplant designation. |
2001 |
Montefiore becomes the nation’s first medical center to develop a Code of Organizational Ethics. |

The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore opens in a state-of-the-art facility. |

First successful operation performed to separate craniofacial conjoined twins. |

Our Lady of Mercy (now the North Division) joins the newly established Montefiore Health System, Inc. |

Montefiore leads development of a Bronx-wide consortium to share patient health information. |
